Means of communication are important cultural elements. Thus old vehicles with their immense diversity of functions represent a long process of learning and adaptation of man to his environment.

"CAPOEIRA"
The CAPOEIRA CART is without a doubt one of the most typical vehicles that trod the old paths of the Algarve. It is just a simple mule cart to which has been added an oiled cloth top commonly known as a "capoeira", or "coop". They are considered very stylish and each design is usually unique to a particular workshop, so it is possible to identify the origin of the vehicle or the place of its production.

"ARANHA"
The SPIDER - Known as a "Spider", this vehicle seems to have inherited from the animal that gives it its name the characteristics of agility and speed, as well as its general appearance, characterized by large fine wheels that support a small but comfortable seat for 2 or 3 people.

"CARRO DE AZEITEIRO"
The OIL DEALER'S CART - Basically a traveling store, the oil dealer goes from door in door selling his products: olive oil, soap, stove fuel, etc. This is a heavy vehicle, totally made of iron, requiring therefore a very strong animal. Although not really an old item, it is without a doubt descended from a type of business (direct sales to the home) very common among city dwellers.

"CARRO DE TRABALHO" (Carreta)
The WORK CART (Carreta) was an extremely strong vehicle for the heaviest tasks. Possibly it would have carried great loads of cork oak, straw or firewood to the rhythmic cadence of a pair of animals (oxen or mules) that pulled it. This one does not possess side panels, even though it may have had them, all depending on the type of load. This comes from S. Bartolomeu de Messines.

"CARROçA DE MULA VULGAR"
The ORDINARY MULE WAGON was a utilitarian mule-drawn vehicle for work and transport of people. It was used along almost all the coast and hillsides of the Algarve. The decorative patterns of bright colors, commonly used, identified the origin. It is still possible today to find some of the last units in use.

"CHURRIÃO"
Churriao is a mean of transportion for people as a public service or sometimes own by rich and large families as private transport. It was a very sturdy vehicle drawn by a pair and suitable for long trips, where the travellers could enjoy such comforts as curtains and quilted and reclining seats which could be changed into beds at night. Although the churriões were considerably more common in the Alentejo than in the Algarve, they were also found here. This one comes from the zone of Albufeira.
